UPDATE: Friends, I’ve just become aware of some information regarding Invisible Children and their KONY 2012 campaign that troubles me. I don’t know what is true or what isn’t true at this point. But I’m looking into it, hoping I can get a better understanding. Until then, I think it’s important to mention THIS in relationship to this latest video from IC.

Tim Tebow Flexes His Bulging Influence in Las Vegas

Las Vegas loves Tim Tebow!

Over the weekend, Tim Tebow flexed his bulging influence at Canyon Ridge Christian Church in Las Vegas, and 20,000 people showed up!

That’s impressive.

Tebow told the crowd…

“You get bashed against the rocks sometimes,” Tebow said Sunday at one of the church’s four weekend services. “But when you have a relationship with Christ … One of my favorite quotes is, ‘I don’t know what my future holds, but I know who holds it.’ I know what my rock is. I know who’s holding my future.”

And while the frenzy surrounding Tim can get obnoxious, I must admit, Tim seems like a really good guy. Over the top in some ways? Sure. But equally sincere.

“One of the reasons I get on a knee is because that’s a form of humbling yourself,” Tebow explained. “I want to humble myself before the Lord and say thank you for this opportunity. Thank you for letting me play the game I love.”

The 24-year-old talked about the Bible verses written in the eye black he wears during the game — he said he was shocked that 94 million people did a Google search for “John 3:16″ after he wore it during the 2009 national championship. He talked about his teammates teasing him for not cursing on the field.

And he discussed his visits to orphans, hospitalized children and jails.

He visits death row inmates “just to shake their hand or give them a hug when I’m not supposed to, because the guards get mad, to show them someone still cares and loves them and that God forgives them and still wants a relationship with them. It’s one of the coolest things I get to do.”

Beyond the Tebow-mania in the church auditorium and the overflow tent on the Las Vegas campus, Odor said more than 1,000 people had logged on to the church’s website to watch a live feed of one Saturday night service, hailing from far-flung countries including Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

And then there’s this…

The honorarium Tebow received for speaking at the church is being donated to his foundation, which is building a hospital in the Philippines.

His critics might say, “Well, he can afford to do that…” Which is true. But we know lots of people who can afford to give away their honorariums and yet, don’t.

John Piper’s Twister Theology

John Piper loves tornadoes. On his blog today, he wrote…

Why would God reach down his hand and drag his fierce fingers across rural America killing at least 38 people with 90 tornadoes in 12 states, and leaving some small towns with scarcely a building standing, including churches?

So that’s what tornadoes are? The fingerprints of God? Quite different from how people picture the footprints of God.

If God has a quarrel with America, wouldn’t Washington, D.C., or Las Vegas, or Minneapolis, or Hollywood…

Or Seattle, or maybe Bob Dole’s house?

…be a more likely place to show his displeasure?

We do not ascribe such independent power to Mother Nature or to the devil. God alone has the last say in where and how the wind blows. If a tornado twists at 175 miles an hour and stays on the ground like a massive lawnmower for 50 miles, God gave the command.

“The wind of the Lord, shall come, rising from the wilderness, and it shall strip Ephraim’s treasury of every precious thing” (Hosea 13:15).

“The Lord turned the wind into a very strong west wind, which lifted the locusts and drove them into the Red Sea” (Exodus 10:19).

“God appointed a scorching east wind” (Jonah 4:8).

“God commanded and raised the stormy wind” (Psalm 107:25).

“Even winds and sea obey Jesus” (Matthew 8:27).

But why Marysville and not Minneapolis?

God got Minneapolis in 2009, John. Remember? You wrote about it. You proclaimed it was Lutheran/homosexuality related.

Why Henryville and not Hollywood?

Hollywood has Tom Cruise, John. And as you know, Tom Cruise is God’s armpit sweat.

God has spoken about these things. Consider three ways he addresses — all of us. (Read about the three things John Piper wrote here.)

According to John Piper, I was hiding with Elias in my bathtub on Friday because God scratched a finger across West Nashville. Nobody died. Must have been his pinky.

But God scratched Indiana and Kentucky good.

If what John says is true, is it safe to assume that God is sitting on Sudan?

I don’t understand natural disaster theology. It’s mean, and in the end, it’s just speculative opinion.

But for some people, when respected pastors like John Piper speak with authority about God “scratching” Indiana and Kentucky or about God stomping his foot on Japan, they believe it. Does the sovereignty of God only apply to weather patterns? It’s a cool clear day in Nashville this morning. Is God winking at us?

Forgive me for making light of something that really is quite serious.

How we talk about God matters.

And as much as John Piper talks about fearing God, you might think he’d be more careful with what he says about God or not be so quick to attach God’s name to things like tornadoes.

Because if John Piper is right, God flicked his finger in Indiana on Friday and tossed a 15-month-old baby 10 miles away from her home. She was found alive, but sadly, died two days later. Why? Because of God’s fierce finger.

I can’t help but wonder if this is the same God whose arms we will encourage that baby’s surviving family members to find shelter in during their loss, the same God whose hands we will say holds them during their devastating journey? Is this the same God?

And if so, would you trust those hands?

I don’t know if it’s real or if it’s been manipulated.

As far as I can tell, it seems to be legit.

Thoughts?

Is Miley Cyrus an atheist?

That’s the question some people are asking, including The Good Atheist, where I found this story.

Why? Because of this tweet…

It’s that whole “So Forget Jesus… ” part that’s gotten people wondering about Miley’s faith or lack of faith.

A quick check here reveals a vast array of opinions about Miley’s tweet.

So do you think Miley is an atheist? Or do you think she’s just being Miley (who might also be an atheist)?

Or is it possible that Miley thought Lawrence was talking about the “Bright and Morning Star”?

Or Louie Giglio’s Jesus?

Or perhaps Miley’s just being 19, which often is an age when people start asking big questions faith.
